SWEAT

20 January, 2013

Sweating in the sun’s rage

while Esmerelda nibbles at her perch

to a certain end

as I quibble with mine.

Footsteps on the deck clickityclickthockbump

There is no softening cover

inviting the toes to bury their noses

other than the dust.

The cat’s tail twitches as his head flits

this way and that, searching

for an escape from the lattice

as I seek escape from the trellis of memory upon which you grew

Basted in tears heat-drawn from my lonely skin

while Esmerelda nibbles and cattail twitches

I wait for the long loneliness to end

as I sweat in the sun’s merciless accusation.
